Health and Safety
We strive to maintain a clean, safe and healthy workplace for our employees and retail shop for our customers. There are several things we’d like you to know before you come and visit us:
This is a busy industrial space. There are always large objects and pallets of pieces in the shop. Please take care when you are walking through the shop to your blast cabinet and be aware of potential hazards, including slipping. We respectfully limit children to school age, and prohibit pets from entering the shop.
We have a large air compressor and cabinets expelling that compressed air. Therefore, the shop can be loud. We offer complimentary ear plugs for you to use, and we recommend that you do.
Several of the medias that we use have known health risks:
Walnut shells and their dust can cause anaphylaxis in those that have nut allergies. Make sure you bring your Epi-Pen with you if you have nut allergies.
*UPDATE* We are no longer using Garnet in our shop. OSHA in the US has changed the limits to allowable respirable crystalline silica and our filtering equipment cannot meet the new lower requirements.
*END*
Alluvial Garnet has <0.1% crystalline silica by volume, which is a known carcinogen. Although your exposure level is extremely low, please ask a staff member for a dust mask if you will be working at a Garnet cabinet.
Blasting cabinets can generate a lot of static electricity and can cause shocks to the operator. Pay special attention if you are wearing an electrical medical device, such as a pacemaker, insulin pump, holter monitor, etc.
Always heed the instructions and warnings of the staff when using our equipment. They are trained in its’ safe operation and have your health and safety in mind.
If you have any health or safety related concerns, please do not hesitate to contact a staff member.
